We ate lunch at The Bread Bowl in Hiawatha, KS on Saturday, May 8 at about 11:30 am. Honestly, we were heading to First Street Bar & Grill in Hiawatha when we passed this and I remember WenDee posting at the Kansas Sampler Foundation FB page about the amazing pie at The Bread Bowl, and pie won!

So the outside of this restaurant is hard to decipher. It's kind of run down, but in a cool and deliberate way? It's kind of an odd shaped older building on a highway through Hiawatha. It looks like it might have been a mechanic shop or something? It is covered with old tin to give it that rustic look. As you walk in, it looks like a small town diner. It's has a long dining hall, and it looks like it was added on (which gives it the odd shape?). Tables are very close together and there is one long farm table in the middle that you may share with other diners. We sat at our own table and a nice waitress took our order. It took a little bit of time to get our food but that was ok. We run a restaurant and we know how things can go! We took this time to study up our Kanas Explorer Guidebook and the BKRT Magazine on things to do next!

FAMILY EXPLORER TIP!: Always throw in a couple of reading books and activity books in your purse or diaper bag. You never know how long waits will be at restaurants and these have been life savers when you don't want them to stare at a phone but also want them to behave!

My husband had the Blackberry Chicken Sandwich with Gouda (so yummy, although it would be better as a warm sandwich), and I had a taco salad, which was also delicious. Our kids both had mac & cheese, always up their alley! We decided to splurge on a Bumbleberry Pie piece to share! What is bumbleberry you may ask? We have no idea either! But it was amazing! The servings are very generous! We think it was a mix of berries, I tasted a strawberry for sure.

Their menu mainly had sandwiches, wraps and salads on it, but they did have a few bigger dinner options like a roast beef plate and lasagna.

While we sat, we also saw several customers come in for special cakes they had ordered. So they must do great with their bakery options!

You can't beat homemade food, and I can't wait to go back and try some more of their delicious desserts! Go give this restaurant a try!

Have you been to The Bread Bowl? What are your thoughts?
